Subject: WHOSE SONG?: "...and you were a debutante." Please Help Date: 1999/02/01 From: jjs@ccnet.com (Joshua F. Some years ago while listening to FM radio I heard a tune that told the story of a fellow who worked at a hotel as, I believe, a bellman or bellboy and saw, met, ran into a "debutante." The song had something to do with his wanting her and their 'differences.' The chorus went something like: "I was a bellboy at the Hilton Hotel and you were a debutante." (It may have been a different hotel name and I may be a bit off on the rest, but I remember the phrase "... and you were a debutante.") I thought it was a Tom Waits tune, but apparently it is not, or so I've been told. It also sounded a bit like a Harry Chapin tune. (But isn't by him either, from what I've gathered.) (I'm still holding out for it to be a really obscure or bootleg Waits recording.) Could it be by Leonard Cohen? Help! If you know who wrote or recorded this tune will you Please let me know here and by e-mail. Much thanks. Josh Cohen jjs@ccnet.com
