Hi Jack, Thanks for your interest. I will be working with a group of approximately 40 to 50 inner city, at-risk Hispanic girls, ages 12 - 16. After some discussion about the contexts of adolescence, i.e. families, peer groups, school, and the adolescent workplace, and the usual travails of that age (remember? identity, autonomy, emotional and sexual intimacy, achievement, psychosocial adjustments, and the particular problems of their neighborhood, the gangs, the drugs, the poverty), each girl will choose one problem she wishes to work out. She will make a puppet to personify that problem, and then I will guide her in conversations with her problem. She will be her own voice and the voice of the problem (the puppet). Each girl will also make a mask to wear when speaking to their puppet/problem. This frees them from having to be bound by the reality of their own identity and then, through the alter ego, the girl comes to know many things about herself and about her problem. This is really an oversimplified account of what I will be doing, but you get the idea. I have also done this with adults. I have found that the psychology of many adults responds well to adolescent psychology. Hmmmmm.....well, if it works, do it......
